    Academic Background

Wing-Hung Ki received the B.Sc. degree from the University of California, San Diego, in 1984, the M.Sc. degree from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1985, and the Engineer degree and the Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1990 and 1995, respectively, all in electrical engineering.

Ki joined Micro Linear Corporation, San Jose, CA, in 1992 as a Senior Design Engineer in the Department of Power and Battery Management, working on the design of power converter controllers. He then joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1995, where he is now a Professor with the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. His research interests are power management circuits and systems, switch mode power converters, switched-capacitor power converters, low dropout regulators, bandgap references, micro-power energy harvesting circuits, RFID and micro-sensor circuits, and fundamental research in analog integrated circuit analysis and design.

Ki is serving on the International Technical Program Committee (ITPC) of the IEEE International Solid-State Circuit Conference (ISSCC, known as Chip Olympiad) since 2009; and served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs (2004-2005). He was the recipient of the Asia Innovator Award (1998) granted by EDN Asia; the Outstanding Design Award (2004) and the Special Feature Award (2006) of the LSI University Design Contest organized by the Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference; the Best Paper Award of the IEEE International Symposium on Low Power Electronic Devices (2007) and the IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Circuits (2009); and the Student Paper Contest (First Prize) of the IEEE Int'l. On Research Articles

A research article must be accurate in its claims, contains no erroneous results, and contradicts no established ones, best, to resolve contradictions if they do exist. It should exhibit elements of novelty, that it describes new direction of research, or that it proposes new method in solving existing problems. The objective should be clearly stated and should relate to prior efforts and solutions. Literature search has to be adequate if not exhaustive. The article should address why the proposed method is preferred. Arguments should be consistent and coherent, straightforward and uncomplicated, such that anyone in the field could follow easily. The article should not purport obscure results that are intractable. It should be concise and precise, that one finds it exceedingly difficult to be abridged without sacrificing clarity.

I do not suggest that my articles fulfill all the above criteria, but they are the standards that I have been working hard to achieve. I particularly hope that my students could follow the above guidelines in writing up their research articles.

    The Paradox on Truth

No one ever demonstrates that he or she possesses truth, and we are unable to establish an encompassing definition for truth. Even though we ever get hold of a piece of it, we are unable to tell that we have got it. In a sense, we are fathoming an indefinite target, although (most of us would not object that) truth should be eternal.

This paradox is implied by the philosophy of Karl Popper.

Remark: Much effort of humanity is devoted to the pursuit of truth. In the process of searching, we are of course shaping our view on truth. Yet it will be a tabulation of entities instead of a concise statement.

    On Studying

I would like to share my experience in studying for classes and research with you, and hope you would find it useful. In studying for classes, I put reading the text as the first priority, since a good text presents material in a logical order, and provides details and examples that one would find it easy to follow. The first time could be a cursory reading in grabbing main points rather than particulars. Then a detail study should follow. I will underline all important points in red. My criteria for underlining is that one should get all information needed by just reading the underlined parts, and I can assure you that less than 30% of any text would contain essential information. Class notes should also be studied. Since most class notes are sketchy, I will append all that has been missed out, especially derivations that are incomplete. When the examination arrives, I will have equipped myself with an abridged text and a detail notes, which would take less time to review. In studying for research, the same procedure applies. Research works are mostly incomplete, and I will add questions and comments at appropriate spots to remind myself of unresolved issues. Of course, there are articles that need not be read in detail, which can be screened out by personal judgment.

    On Paradoxes

    (1) This statement is false.

Now, if we assume (1) is true, then the content of (1) dictates that (1) is false. If we assume (1) is false, then (1) is true!!

Many logicians suggest that the above paradox is due to self-referencing. Yet, I would argue that the problem of (1) is due to its meaninglessness. Let us consider a related example.

In this case, we may conclude that (1a) is true. But in fact, we don't know what (1a) actually means. It is only a scrabble of words that is devoid of content. Let us consider yet another example.

We know exactly what the sentence means, and conclude immediately that (1b) is a contradiction. Yet we cannot understand (1a) (and (1)) on the same ground. Since (1) is devoid of meaning, it fails to be a statement. The paradox is due to the fact that (1) is logically nonsensical.

    (2) The liar paradox

Consider Epimenides, a Cretan, claims that all Cretans are liars. Is he telling the truth?

We have a paradox, if in fact, all Cretans are liars. This logical impossibility ensures that not all Cretans are liars, and Epimenides was lying on his claim.

For more of these logic puzzles and paradoxes, the readers may refer to "5000 B.C. and Other Philosophical Fantasies" by Raymond Smullyan. Many a time these examples are used in preliminary discussion of the Godel's Incompleteness Theorems.

    0 123 456 789 x 80 = 9 876 543 120

The fact is that when 0123456789 is multiplied by an integer smaller than or equal to 80, many (33) of the products contain all the numerals in a scrabbled fashion, a total of 41%. This seems not to apply to other numbers.

    Also,

    987 654 321.0 x 2 = 1 975 308 642

    Similar observation applies.
